I will endeavour to keep searching out more Viners who emit at least occasional tweets and add them to the list.

I realize I'm not terribly active on Newsvine these days, but my twitter account has been linked from every article I've written for months now.

I guess that says a lot about how inactive I've been.

Twitter newbie question: can it be set so that it automatically begins following those who sign up to follow me?

Also I'm running, at Brad's suggestion, Twirl. Is there a way to make Twirl start up automatically?

Twitter newbie question: can it be set so that it automatically begins following those who sign up to follow me?

I haven't found a way to do that. You can have Twitter e-mail you when someone starts following you, and go through that list later, but I don't think there's an automatic way to do it.

You can use TweetLater to automatically follow anyone that follows you. And you can set twirl to start automatically just like any other program by putting it in the startup folder (search for a folder named "startup"...or get a program for modifying the startup list)

Scott,
I would strongly recommend against following anyone who follows you. There are a TON of twitter spammers who simply "follow you" so that you will look to see who they are and then be subjected to their spam.

In fact, just today, I turned off the feature of emailing me when folks follow me simply because I got sick of all the crap twitter users who really aren't interesting but, instead, are interested in MLM or SEO.

what's twirl? I must check this out.

It's a dance move I'll show you when we make it to Chicago. Is it really going to be clothing optional?

It's a way for twitter messages to pop up on your screen.

Finalcut, I can always turn it off later but it seems logical right now as I've received emails from 20 viners today now following me.

I am pretty good at laying down BS fertilizer in case it gets pruned :-)

So one question about Twitter. Do you have to be a member of Twitter to "Tweet" and can anyone talk to you or do you have to add them as friends ? Like could I send a message to someone from a PC ?

You do need an account to twitter, but you can talk to someone who is not your 'friend' if you know their username.

If Newsvine's uptime had the consistency of the site problems last week, Newsvine would still be 100 times as stable as Twitter. :-)

In all fairness, Twitter is very quickly fixing their problems. They've had some pretty good uptime reports lately. Nowhere near the peak of their problems when they were down for entire days at a time.

Twitter is actively rearchitecting their entire system. There are painfully bad periods of downtime.

I mostly use BrightKite now adays (and have it funnel my posts to twitter). The problem is getting my small list of friends to move to a different service. I like the potential of bright kite thanks to the optional "location awareness" where you can post your location and then your friends can find you if they want to.

However, in an effort help keep the directory updated I am, wait for it.... finalcut on twitter (and on brightkite, and just about everywhere else)

Personally I use Hellotxt because it just seems less complicated, and it's been around longer. In terms of amount of services that they will let you post to, I think it's about the same.
It works the way it should, it's not as pretty as Ping.FM, but whatever.

HelloTXT is italian though, so some of the language/grammar is a little off.

I use Ping.FM. It does a good job, that I've seen, and its ability to come up with custom routing tags** is very useful. As near as I can tell HellTxt doesn't offer a similar capability.

** For example, if you only want an update to go to your services that use status updates, you can prepend your IM to Ping.FM with @s. If you only want an update to to services that are micro-blogs, you can prepend it with @m. If you only want it to go to Twitter, you can prepend @tt, etc.

HelloTXT eliminates the need for such codes by having checkboxes right next to the entry field. If you want to only post to a certain micro-blogging service you would just uncheck all other boxes.

But you need to do that from the website, right? The thing is that I donʼt usually browse to the website, I just have my IM client open and I can IM the bot. Also, if I were to post an update from my mobile phone, it would be convenient to be able to route messages.

Yep, that's where Ping.FM has HelloTXT beat.

HTXT doesn't have an IM bot and does not let you post to specific services via SMS (it's all or nothing). They do have a beta mobile version of the site so if you had a smart phone you could do it from there.

As I mentioned in Scott's discussion about Twitter, my usage goes through cycles of near-constant updates (especially if I'm bored at work or whatever) and droughts of once-a-week updates as the mood strikes. Lately I've been more active.
